Fr Nageeb and the Vertical Village

Ankawa, Erbil

Gulan supporters may remember the talk given by Fr Nageeb Michaeel at Gulan’s event, the Christians of Kurdistan held in London during October 2013. Gulan is pleased to report on the on going work being done by Fr Nageeb Michaeel with refugees and displaced persons in Ankawa, the Christian suburb of Erbil, the capital of the Kurdistan region of Iraq.

The images on this page show Fr Nageeb’s “Vertical Village” in Ankawa, its nursery, women’s workshops, chapel, small business projects, space for conservation and restoration of ancient manuscripts, and water purification plant, for which further funding is needed.

On 30th April 2016 a fundraising tea party was organised by Soizic Timon and Della Murad in Chelsea when Richard Wilding gave an illustrated talk about the Kurdistan region. Kurdish artist Mariwan Jalal donated two art works which were sold by silent auction. Altogether some £1,500 was raised which Della and Richard delivered personally to Fr Nageeb

At the Frome Festival on 6th July (as reported elsewhere) Richard Wilding gave a talk, Kurdistan: A Dream Suspended.  The organisers of the event, including Simon Keyes, Visiting Professor at the University of Winchester Centre of Religion, Reconciliation and Peace, raised £500 for Fr Nageeb, which together with further funds raised resulted in a donation of some US$ 1300 being taken to Ankawa and given to Fr Nageeb by Della Murad on 11th October 2016.
