About Gulan
Gulan is a charity registered in the UK for the promotion of Kurdish arts and culture. Gulan was established in 2008. It is managed by a board of trustees, Sarah Panizzo, David Carrington and Carla Garnelas. The inspiration for the formation of Gulan, its Artistic Director and the curator of its events, is Della Murad.
Della was born in Halabja in the Kurdish region of Iraq. She works as an image consultant and fashion designer. She has organised many fashion shows with museums such as the V & A, The Museum of London and the British Museum, and in other countries including the Netherlands, German, Dubai and Kurdistan. Her designs are improvisations on traditional Kurdish styles. She also promotes Kurdish food through her organisation, Della's Kitchen.
Sarah's career has been as a commercial solicitor with a City firm, and with extensive cross border experience, particularly with Italy. She has non executive board experience of a range of companies, and as a charity trustee. In 2004 Sarah began working with Della as her mentor when Della won a Millenium Award. Since then she has continued to be involved in Kurdish cultural events and founded Gulan to assist in this work.
David has been an independent consultant since 2001, drawing on 25 years experience of senior management positions in charities, the last 13 as Chief Executive. He has board member experience with over a dozen organisations. At present he is a member of the Supervisory Board of Triodos Bank NV and a director of Big Society Capital.
Carla has a background in charity work and Jewish education. Carla has a M.A. (hons) in Social Anthropology from Edinburgh and a Msc. in Race and Ethnic Relations from Birkbeck. She is Head of Policy and Public Affairs at the Children's Rights Alliance for England and is a board member of the Jewish Council for Racial Equality.
